THE ARTIST

CATHERINE BOTTIAU

Catherine was born in Buffalo, NY, of French parents. She traveled back and forth to France in her early years visiting family and appreciating the talents of her relatives in the artistic world. She began her own artistic life at the age of five, drawing animals and portraits of family members and friends. At the age of nine, she moved back to France for one year to increase her knowledge in her heritage and art. She studied ballet under the tutelage of her aunt, an accomplished ballet performer and teacher in France. Catherine returned to New York and continued to study ballet with the "Empire State Ballet Co.", but her first love was painting and art. At the age of twelve, she began painting in oils, as well as pursuing her training in ballet. Her major efforts in art continued throughout High School and upon graduation Catherine was commissioned to create a mural for a restaurant/lounge. Soon after she received a second commission to assist another artist for a mural to be done in a major shopping mall in Buffalo.

At the age of nineteen, Catherine moved to Los Angeles, California to further her artistic education. She attended UCLA extension classes in oil painting and took private courses from an accomplished artist, Ron Marlett. It was then that she learned to use the glazing technique that she specializes in today for the depth and transparency that it gives to colors. Her art has been displayed at the Los Angeles Museum of Rock Art and the Gallery Marlett.

Catherine moved to Paris, France and continued to expand her artistic education and work. She was commissioned to paint various portraits,as well as re-creations of several Masters. Catherine married and relocated to the city of Valenciennes, in the North of France near the Belgian border. Here, Catherine was commissioned to paint numerous icons for the church. Her art was displayed at numerous art shows, the Galerie Schemes in Lille, and the Galerie Philppe II in Valenciennes, France.

In 1995, Catherine left France to return to the United States. Today, she lives in Florida and continues to paint on commission, as well as create her own masters. She paints in any style from Old Masters to abstract. She has a particular affection for the unicorn depicted in some of her paintings as a symbol of purity and strength.

For those who appreciate unicorns as she does, she intends to produce many more unicorn paintings in the future.
